How To Protect Your Puppy From Parvovirus

Posted on: 15 September 2014

Parvovirus, commonly called just "parvo," is a virus that is a common concern for puppy owners. Puppies in particular are susceptible to parvo because their immune systems are not yet fully developed. This virus causes severe vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, which can lead to acute dehydration. Dog may also be lethargic and have no interest in eating or drinking. Parvo requires emergency medical attention. A vet will give your dog intravenous fluids and replenish his electrolytes. Parvo is very dangerous and can result in death if left untreated.

Here are three ways to prevent parvo:

1. Vaccinate your puppy.

  • Vaccines are the most effective way of protecting your puppy from parvo.
  • Your puppy should get his first vaccine at around 6 weeks of age, then at 3-4 week intervals until he is 16 weeks old, according to Vetinfo.
  • Your dog will need a booster shot for parvo when he is a year old. After this, getting vaccinated once every three years will ensure your dog continuing protection well into adulthood.

2. Keep your puppy away from other dogs.

  • WebMD explains that puppies are most vulnerable during the window of time after they are no longer protected by their mother's antibodies, but before they finish their parvo vaccinations.
  • Until puppies finish their entire course of parvo vaccinations at around 16 weeks, keep them away from other dogs as much as possible. This includes other, older household pets.
  • Keep your puppy indoors, and carry him if you need to take him outside. Do not take your puppy for walks until he has received all his shots. Even your backyard can be unsafe, as your puppy could be exposed to parvovirus there.

3. Disinfect your home.

  • Disinfect all the surfaces in your home that your puppy can access, as parvovirus can live on many household surfaces.
  • For best results, use a 1:9 combination of bleach to water to clean hard surfaces. Let the bleach sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.
  • Be sure to keep your puppy safe in another room while you disinfect.

Protecting your dog from disease is part of responsible pet ownership. By vaccinating your puppy with places like Edinburgh Animal Hospital and keeping him away from situations that could expose him to parvovirus, you will be doing all you can to keep your puppy safe from parvo. Your dog will be happier and healthier, and you'll get to experience the joys of puppyhood, without additional worry.
